Photometric testing
LightLab offers a comprehensive range of photometric testing services, including custom testing to your requirements. Our technicians have many years of experience and will help you determine what course of action is necessary whatever your testing needs. Our goal is to supply you with succinct, accurate and meaningful information.
Your photometric results
Information we provide to you takes many forms. Traditional communication of results is in the form of printed test reports. We supply NATA endorsed reports for those laboratory activities that are covered by our NATA accreditation. Regardless of whether the measurements are covered by our accreditation or not you can rest assured we will perform the test to the same exacting standards. Please refer to our laboratory quality document for further information.
For applicable test types (refer to the table below) we will provide photometric data files. We can generate photometric data in many formats recognized internationally and by all lighting design software:
All of our printed test reports can be supplied in an industry standard electronic format. You gain the ease of use of electronic reports, in distribution, publishing and archiving while retaining the security of unambiguous traceability. For more information about our electronic publishing services please contact us.
Photometric data is the raw currency of lighting design. We can put your photometric data to work. With many decades of experience in lighting design and the application of lighting in architecture our designers can create pleasing designs whatever your requirements.

Services
The laboratory operates two photometers, a rotating mirror goniophotometer with an optical path length of 8 metres and an A type goniophotometer with a variable optical path length of 3 metres to 25 metres. The laboratory also operates a 2 m diameter integrating sphere. The equipment is backed by an array of electrical, thermal and colorimetric measurement equipment.
Our standard photometric service is the photometry of luminaires, be they interior luminaires, floodlights, street lanterns or other light sources. Specialty luminaires such as emergency EXIT signs require additional measurements.

Light Sources*
Our standard photometric service is the photometry of luminaires, be they interior luminaires, floodlights, street lanterns or other light sources. Specialty luminaires such as emergency EXIT signs require additional measurements.
Commercial Lighting*
- Categories - Interior lighting*, Street lighting*, Floodlighting*, Light sources*
- Types - office fluorescent, downlight, street lantern, floodlight, bollard, lamps
- Test method - mirror goniophotometer for spatial distribution testing, integrating sphere
- Standards - IESNA LM-79. CIE S025
- Results - The results consist of a printed report containing information pertinent to the luminaire type. For interior luminaires: LOR, SHR, utilisation factor, luminance, I-table and a polar curve diagram are standard. For floodlights, the report contains: beam parameters, LOR, isocandela diagram, major axis chart. Streetlantern reports contain: CIE control parameters, LOR in the four quadrants, isolux diagram, I-table. It is possible to include any and all information in a report for any luminaire upon request. In addition, testing can be performed against the requirements of CIBSE LG3 and the results reported in terms of the appropriate CIBSE category. We can work with you to improve the performance of your product. Reports are electronically published and the charts and diagrams are separately published on request. Photometric data files in any of the formats supported by the laboratory are issued.
Automotive Lighting
- Categories - Signal lamp, headlamp, reflex reflector
- Types - turn indicator*, headlamp, stop lamp*, tail lamp*, position marker*, reverse lamp*, registration plate lamp*, reflex reflector
- Test method - A type goniophotometer
- Standards - ADR (Australian Design Rule), ECE, JIS, SAE
- Results - The report that is issued states the standard against which it is tested, the requirements of the standard, the measured results and a summary indicating a pass/fail summary for each requirement. For R&D purposes additional information including tabulated spreadsheet, isocandela diagrams.
Emergency Lighting*
- Categories - Emergency luminaire*, Emergency EXIT sign*
- Standards - AS 2293
- Test method - Samples are tested on a mirror goniophotometer for emergency classification categories. EXIT signs are tested for luminance, format and colour conformity to the standard. An endurance / thermal test is required prior to the classification and luminance tests to determine the test voltage of the internal electronic circuit.
- Results - The classification report is similar to a standard photometric test report with the addition of the emergency classification information. Emergency EXIT luminaires require a report that states the luminance values and CIE x,y coordinates measured, and indicates a pass/fail for luminance, colour and format.
Other Luminaires
- Categories - Traffic signal lantern, Aviation lighting, Marine lighting, Railway signalling
- Standards - AS2144 (Traffic signal lanterns) the other signal lanterns are covered by a variety of standards.
- Test method - Samples are tested on the laboratory A type goniophotometer.
- Results - Each category and sample type has a defined test report format containing a summary of the test measurements and a pass/fail summary if required by the standard. Reports are electronically published, charts such as isocandela and isolux diagrams are published separately on request.
Light Sources*
- Categories - Luminous flux standard lamp*, Luminous intensity standard lamp*
- Standards - CIE
- Test method - Tests for flux are performed on a mirror goniophotometer, tests for luminous intensity on an optical rail
- Results - The report will state the applicable test quantity. Reports are electronically published
